Half Cut
HalfCut are a grassroots organisation on a mission to save the Daintree Rainforest, the oldest tropical rainforest on Earth, while supporting the Traditional Owners, the Eastern Kuku Yalanji Bama people.
The movement is driving real impact through community-led programs to restore ecosystems, empower Indigenous communities, and protect the Daintree Rainforest—one of the world's most vital biodiversity hotspots.
Together, we're not just saving rainforests; we're healing country and culture!
HEAL COUNTRY, HEAL CULTURE PROGRAM
Funds raised support their Heal Country, Heal Culture program, a community led initiative, run with the Jabalbina Yalanji Aboriginal Corporation. The program focuses on five core pillars to support a Green Economy in the Daintree. Every dollar raised supports:
Daintree Buyback
Securing and protecting vital rainforest areas to preserve biodiversity and cultural heritage for future generations.
Rewilding
Restoring the Daintree through tree planting, invasive species management, and regenerative agriculture to ensure a thriving ecosystem.
Indigenous Training and Employment
Empowering the Eastern Kuku Yalanji Bama people with meaningful jobs and skills to manage and care for their ancestral land.
Affordable Housing
Providing sustainable housing on cleared land, allowing families to live on and reconnect with their traditional country.
Scientific Research and Administration
Partnering with universities to drive innovation, study the rainforest’s resilience, and support sustainable management.
This means your support helps ensure the Daintree survives for future generations, in the hands of its traditional owners.
The Daintree Rainforest is one of the most ancient and biodiverse ecosystems on Earth. It's a natural wonder that has stood the test of time for over 180 million years. Located in Far North Queensland, Australia, the Daintree is not just a beautiful landscape; it's a vital part of our global ecosystem, home to a vast array of plant and animal species, many of which are found nowhere else on the planet.
The Daintree is often referred to as a living museum, containing species that have survived since the time of the dinosaurs. This rainforest is a refuge for unique and endangered species, including the Southern Cassowary, the Bennett's Tree-kangaroo, and the ancient Hope's Cycad. These species rely on the Daintree's diverse habitats to survive, and the destruction of their home puts them at great risk.
According to Rainforest Rescue, approximately half of the rainforest in the lowland areas of the Daintree has been cleared for development. This alarming fact highlights the ongoing pressures that the Daintree faces due to deforestation, agriculture, and development. Despite these challenges, the remaining rainforest is of exceptionally high biodiversity and conservation value.
HalfCut aims to buy back and protect crucial forests for the habitat of threatened and endangered species, protect Traditional Owners’ land titles, start mass tree planting projects and ultimately be part of the solution to the growing climate emergency.
The deforestation of the Daintree, particularly in the lowland areas, is not just a loss of trees; it’s a loss of entire ecosystems. When the forest is cleared, the intricate web of life it supports is torn apart. The loss of habitat leads to a decline in biodiversity, which in turn affects the health of the entire planet.
Moreover, the cultural impact on the Traditional Owners of the land, the Eastern Kuku Yalanji Bama people, is profound. The rainforest is deeply intertwined with their cultural practices, spirituality, and way of life. The destruction of the Daintree is not just an environmental issue; it's a cultural crisis.
The time to act, is now.
Now more than ever, we need to come together to protect the Daintree Rainforest. Every action counts, whether it’s donating, spreading awareness, or participating in conservation efforts.
Together, we can heal the Daintree, protect its biodiversity, and preserve the cultural heritage of the Eastern Kuku Yalanji Bama people for generations to come.
Every purchase you make from Bohemi helps contribute to the mission, thank you! If you would like to make an additional contribution, you can donate here.
